Construction Works on Hung Shui Kiu Station Railway Viaduct Project
Hung Shui Kiu Station will be the first MTR station to be built on an operating railway viaduct. In this project, Kum Shing will be assisting with relocating the trackside electrical and mechanical (E&M) equipment, setting up temporary fences, installing lighting system and directional signs, and removing the upper portion of the parapet on the existing viaduct. To ensure the safe and stable execution of the work, the Kum Shing Civil & Building Team pioritize construction safety by incorporating “Design for Safety” elements at every stage of each project, from design and planning to commissioning.
The removal work of the 400-metre segment of the parapet required the removal of 140 retaining wall components, each weighing 2.5 tons, resulting in a total weight of 350 tons. Kum Shing has designed and manufactured a portable platform suitable for working above ground. This movable platform can be adjusted according to the work location, providing a safe working environment and high efficiency.
The team has also prepared a detailed worksheet, meticulously recording each task with minute precision. They have crafted a full-scale concrete model mirroring the parapet in material and weight, aiding in thorough preparation before project initiation. Preliminary tests, such as using the mobile platform and handling concrete units, have provided valuable insights. Clients were invited to witness these tests, helping them understand Kum Shing’s meticulous work and promoting effective communication.
The Tuen Ma Line operates for over 19 hours daily. To reduce disruptions, the team utilizes the “golden two hours” after regular service hours for construction before trains resume the next day.
Before commencing work on the viaduct, various preparatory tasks must be completed, including mobilizing workers, setting up acoustic enclosures, and arranging necessary equipment at the site. The team also needs to tackle challenges such as late-night work, work above ground and near high-voltage cables, and effective noise control.
Around 4am, an hour before the first train, the team must clear the work area, separate work and operational zones, and restore railway facilities. Upon completion, the MTR’s operations team will conduct a final inspection before commencing operation.
