Provision of Lift Shafts at LAK and SKW Station Project
Kum Shing undertook the lift shaft provision project, installing an additional elevator at Lai King Station and connecting the station concourse and ground floor at Sau Kei Wan Station.
Lai King Station, built along a hill, is a 7-level station integrating overhead, ground, and underground modes, serving as an interchange station between the Tsuen Wan Line and Tung Chung Line. Due to environmental constraints to prevent dust creation from foundation works, the site area had to be completely confined and equipped with ventilation devices to reduce the frequency of workers’ access. Furthermore, to avoid disrupting daily railway operations, construction work could only take place from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m., with some narrow spaces allowing entry for only three workers. Coordination with MTR’s testing and maintenance activities on the tracks was also necessary. Regarding the large steel components for the elevator structure, the team had a first prefabrication in the North Territories District before transporting them to the construction site. They then conducted lifting tests and the on-site installation within a day. The team has overcome various challenges, the lift shaft provision project was successfully delivered and inaugurated, providing convenience for passengers traveling to nearby public housing estates and the station concourse.
At Sau Kei Wan Station, a lift was installed in front of the B1 entrance and exit, offering an accessible pathway for passengers in need. As the construction site was located near King Shan Lane and restaurants, the project team maintained a pedestrian walkway of no less than 2 meters wide and paid attention to community relations.
