Hong Kong Energy Infrastructure Limited (HEI), a subsidary of Kum Shing Holdings, provided consultancy service to the Hong Kong International Airport to build an outdoor 5G network trial at the airside area.

HEI assumed the role of owner’s engineer to walk through the whole process of design, planning, installation, commissioning and optimization of the trial of 5G system at the airfield of the airport. A range of 28GHz Radio Base Station (RBS) equipment was installed on three 12m tall lamp poles and also one of the 20m tall high mast poles, while a set of 4G RBS equipment was fitted on the remaining 12m tall lamp pole as an anchor for the whole radio system.

This successful trial of signal coverage, throughout speed and reliability, as well as overcoming the technical challenges of deploying a 5G system using a network of outdoor lamp poles, meant innovative technology for smarter travel will appear the blink of an eye.

HEI team provided timely input to HKAA, enabling Hong Kong International Airport to deploy an optimal design for its permanent 5G system.
