Upgrade Of West Kowloon-Tsuen Wan Sewage System

Kum Shing assisted the Drainage Services Department on replacing aging sewers in Tsuen Wan, Kowloon City, Kwai Chung, Sham Shui Po, and Cheung Sha Wan. Our Civil & Building Tram is responsible for replacing and upgrading 14 kilometers of gravity sewers, rehabilitating six existing sewer crossings within stormwater box culverts and constructing two new dry weather flow interceptors and ancillary works. All the works will be carried out in the densely populated districts of Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung, Sham Shui Po and Kowloon Tong. To handle this, strong brownfield experience and stakeholder management in the community are crucial.

Unlike a typical construction project involving simple demolition of a structure followed by building on the cleared plot, congested and sometimes uncharted underground utilities add to the difficulties in public engineering works. A further complication is that the gravity sewer system must descend continuously and smoothly. No bends in the sewer pipe are allowed in either the vertical profile or horizontal alignment. This brownfield project also requires that the operation of the running sewer be maintained during throughout the works period. Temporary diversion works must be set before the sewer system upgrade commences.

With the use of various trenchless construction technology, such as tunnel boring machine (TBM) and coring, impacts on traffic and the public can be significantly minimised.
